Most people wait too long before visiting the dentist β often until a problem becomes painful or expensive to fix. But your mouth gives you clear signals well before reaching that stage. Here are 10 warning signs that tell you to book a dental appointment immediately.
1. Persistent Tooth Pain
Toothache that lasts more than 2 days is a serious sign. It may indicate deep decay, an abscess (infection), a cracked tooth, or a nerve problem that needs root canal treatment. Pain relievers only mask the symptom β they don't treat the cause. See a dentist urgently.
2. Sensitivity to Hot and Cold
If your teeth hurt sharply when you drink hot tea or eat ice cream, it could signal exposed dentine, enamel erosion, a cracked tooth, or early pulp involvement. Occasional sensitivity is normal β but sharp, lingering pain needs attention.
3. Bleeding Gums
Gums that bleed during brushing or flossing are often an early sign of gingivitis (gum inflammation). Left untreated, this can progress to periodontitis β which destroys the bone supporting your teeth. Don't assume it's 'normal'. Get it checked.
4. Swollen, Red or Tender Gums
Inflamed gums are a sign of infection or gum disease. Swelling accompanied by a bad taste in your mouth can indicate an abscess β which may require immediate drainage and antibiotics. This is a dental emergency.
5. Loose Tooth or Shifting Teeth
Adult teeth should not move. Looseness can indicate advanced periodontitis (bone loss), trauma, or β in rare cases β an underlying medical condition. Don't wait and hope it resolves. Bone loss is permanent.
6. Persistent Bad Breath (Halitosis)
Chronic bad breath that doesn't improve with brushing is often caused by gum disease, deep decay, oral infections, or dry mouth (xerostomia). Mints and mouthwash mask it; only treating the cause eliminates it.
7. White Patches or Sores in Your Mouth
Any white patch (leukoplakia), red patch, or ulcer that doesn't heal within 2 weeks should be evaluated. While most mouth sores are harmless, persistent lesions can β in rare cases β indicate early oral cancer. Early detection is critical.
8. A Cracked or Chipped Tooth
Even a minor crack can worsen with bite pressure. Cracks that extend into the root or pulp may require root canal treatment or extraction. A cracked tooth rarely heals itself β it needs professional repair.
9. Jaw Pain or Clicking
Pain or clicking in the jaw when opening and closing, or difficulty opening your mouth fully, can indicate a TMJ (temporomandibular joint) disorder. Teeth grinding (bruxism) is often associated. A night guard or splint therapy can prevent further damage.
10. It's Been More Than 6 Months Since Your Last Visit
Prevention is always cheaper than cure. Even if you feel no pain, regular 6-monthly check-ups allow your dentist to catch cavities, tartar buildup and early gum disease before they become costly or painful problems.
