India is home to the world's second-largest diabetic population β€” and Bengaluru, despite being a health-conscious city, has one of the highest urban diabetes rates in the country. This guide by our diabetologist at Avashya Healthcare helps you understand, manage and live well with diabetes.

Understanding Your Blood Sugar Numbers

The key numbers every diabetic must know: Fasting blood sugar: Normal <100 mg/dL, Prediabetes 100–125 mg/dL, Diabetes β‰₯126 mg/dL. Post-meal (2 hours): Normal <140 mg/dL, Prediabetes 140–199 mg/dL, Diabetes β‰₯200 mg/dL. HbA1c target: Below 7% for most adults with Type 2 diabetes. Track these numbers monthly and bring your readings to every consultation.

South Indian Diet Modifications for Diabetics

Rice, idli, dosa, sambar β€” South Indian food is not the enemy. Smart modifications make a huge difference: Switch to millets (ragi, jowar, bajra) for at least one meal daily. Choose brown rice or smaller portions of white rice. Eat high-fibre vegetables first before carbohydrates. Avoid sugary drinks, maida-based snacks and processed foods. Include protein (dal, eggs, curd, legumes) in every meal to slow sugar absorption.

Exercise: The Most Underused Diabetes Medicine

Physical activity is as powerful as metformin for many Type 2 diabetics. A 30-minute brisk walk after meals, done 5 days a week, significantly lowers post-meal blood sugar. Resistance training 2–3 times weekly improves insulin sensitivity long-term. Start slowly if you're new to exercise and always check blood sugar before and after exercise until you understand your pattern.

Medication Compliance β€” Why It Matters

Missing diabetes medication even for a day disrupts blood sugar control for several days. If your current medication causes side effects (nausea, hypoglycaemia, weight gain), speak to your doctor β€” there are excellent alternatives. Never self-adjust your insulin dose without guidance.

Preventing Diabetes Complications

Uncontrolled diabetes damages blood vessels and nerves over years, leading to kidney disease, vision loss, nerve damage and heart disease. Annual screening (kidney function, eye exam, foot exam, lipid profile, ECG) is critical. At Avashya Healthcare, we coordinate this screening during your routine review consultations.

The Avashya Free Wednesday Blood Sugar Programme

Every Wednesday, Avashya Healthcare offers a free fasting and random blood sugar test at our RR Nagar clinic β€” no appointment required.
